Mrs. Wilma Thomas arrived at Old Dominion Rehabilitation and Nursing following a complex hospitalization. Her medical history included complications from a pulmonary embolism and an exacerbated malignant neoplasm. Upon evaluation, she presented with hypoxia, weakness, and a dependency on supplemental oxygen. She required assistance for all aspects of daily living, including bed mobility, bathing, dressing, and hygiene tasks.

A Strong Commitment to Recovery
Despite her significant challenges, Mrs. Thomas was motivated to regain her independence and return home to her spouse. With continued insurance authorization, she stayed engaged in physical therapy (PT) and occupational therapy (OT) services for more than four months. Her determination to improve and the expert care of our rehabilitation team led to remarkable progress.
Remarkable Progress and Independence
Today, Mrs. Thomas no longer requires supplemental oxygen, and her balance has greatly improved. While she still needs some assistance with daily activities, she can now transfer and perform bed mobility independently. Mrs. Thomas walks more than 400 feet using a front-wheeled walker and is able to safely navigate the steps to enter her home.
Good News: Cancer Remission
In addition to her impressive recovery, Mrs. Thomas received the most wonderful news during her stay with us—her cancer is in remission! This was a momentous milestone in her healing journey.
